In this vital role, you’ll work directly with residents, offering care, guidance and crisis support that makes a real difference in their lives. What you’ll be doing:
You’ll work directly with adults and young people who are experiencing mental health difficulties, considering whether or not they require a formal assessment under the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA), or whether other least restrictive options are available or appropriate.
Responding in a timely manner to any MHA requests, managing risks and liaising with other partner agencies in planning any appropriate interventions to ensure that the person and any other parties are safely managed. Responding to any urgent referrals that may require to be seen on the day, coordinating the assessment and providing appropriate interventions to meet the needs of the person at that time.
You will be attending assessments and acting independently in urgent, high-stakes situations. We regularly have referrals from the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, the local national Eating Disorder Service Vincent square, as well as local CAMHS inpatient wards.
In addition, you will be expected to complete statutory work in a timely manner, attend court for s135(1) warrants, ensure that a team approach is applied, contribute to the allocated work and ensure that the service is run both safely and responsive.
You will have the opportunity to be a Practice Assessor for AMHP Trainees and support newly qualified AMHPs on the rota. Link in with partner agencies and have the opportunity to provide guidance and support to partner agencies.

What you’ll bring
You’re a registered Social Worker with Social Work England, with relevant qualifications and experience in adult mental health settings as an AMHP. You’ve worked with people facing a range of mental health challenges, including complex or enduring conditions, and you understand how to balance their rights, needs and risks. You have practiced as an AMHP for a minimum of two years with a variety of experience and knowledge with supporting people who may present in crisis and you will need to consider the case under the MHA 1983 s13(1) statutory duties.
You know the legislation inside out – including the Mental Health Act, Care Act, Mental Capacity Act and Children’s Act – and you’re confident in applying it to real-life situations. You’re calm under pressure, clear in your communication, and empathetic when it matters most. Ability to record in a timely manner and escalate where necessary.
You’re comfortable working independently and as a team player, while also contributing to a supportive, team-oriented environment. You value supervision, seek feedback, and want to continue growing in your role. You treat every person with dignity and respect, taking a culturally sensitive, whole-person approach.

New hires will normally start at the minimum of the pay scale. However, a higher starting salary may be negotiated where a candidate demonstrates exceptional skills, knowledge, or experience.
Employees receive annual salary increments until they reach the top of the pay scale, as well as any agreed cost of living pay awards.
